Applied Research and Instrumentation Engineer / Scientist at Applied Research Associates Inc in Leonardo, NJ

Description Applied Research Associates, Inc. (ARA) is seeking a hands-on Scientist or Engineer with demonstrated expertise in laboratory and field measurement systems automation, acoustics, wave mechanics, and/or related sensors development. The staff member would support a wide variety of applied research including oil spill remediation and wave energy projects at the Ohmsett wave tank facility located within the Naval Weapons Station Earle Waterfront site adjacent to Raritan Bay in Leonardo, New Jersey and would work primarily at this location. The staff member would also support applied research and technology development projects in ARA's Littleton, Colorado location through remote work and occasional travel to Colorado. Ohmsett - The National Oil Spill Response Research & Renewable Energy Test Facility located in Leonardo, New Jersey is the largest outdoor saltwater wave/tow tank facility in North America. It is owned by the Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE) and managed/operated by ARA. The facility is undergoing a major renovation in summer 2021 with additional improvements to the facility's testing and laboratory capabilities anticipated in near future. The Engineer/Scientist filling this role will have an exciting opportunity to play a key role in developing these innovative test, measurement, and experimentation systems. Candidates for this position will also support projects at ARA's Littleton, Colorado facility and other ARA office and field locations throughout the US as needed. Travel up to 20% may be required. These projects may include applied research and development spanning topics such as acoustics, wave propagation, ultrasonics, nondestructive evaluation, sensor- development (including person-worn sensors, miniature sensors, air and ocean-deployed sensors), signal processing and machine learning, electromechanical systems integration, hearing protection research, and ballistics modeling. Specific project involvement would be based on the Engineer/Scientist's specific skills and interests. Opportunities to pursue other applied research areas that are of mutual interest are encouraged. What you will do as an Applied Research and Instrumentation Scientist/Engineer:
We are looking for a well-qualified candidate who has experience developing instrumentation, data acquisition, and control systems including measurement automation and signal processing. You will work with small teams of ARA staff and customers to design experiments, specify sensors or measurement methods that will accurately characterize the processes being studied. You will implement or develop effective instrumentation and data collection and analysis systems. Other work may involve design or modeling of related systems and measurement methods, conducting experiments involving the measurement of sound / wave fields and related environmental conditions. At Ohmsett specifically, you will develop test and measurement systems for the wave tank system controls and sensors that go beyond our current capabilities to provide more flexible and comprehensive measurements of the tank's simulated ocean environment. In other projects across ARA, you may contribute to projects in one or more of the following ways:
rapid prototyping, acoustic signal processing and analysis, blast wave propagation studies, ultrasonics testing, and other novel technology development projects. The staff member will play a key role in developing, implementing, and proving out new technologies or methods to assure that our work is extremely relevant and provides great value to our clients. Qualifications Requirements:
Expertise in one or more of the following areas:
mechanical engineering, physical acoustics, oceanography, electrical engineering, physics, chemistry, measurement sciences. Experience developing measurement systems and designing related experimental methods to characterize the ocean environment including surface waves, water quality, etc. Experience conducting experiments in both laboratory and outdoor environments. Proficient in data acquisition system development (e.g., LabVIEW, MATLAB) including experience with a variety of sensors and data acquisition hardware. Knowledgeable in analog signal conditioning and filtering, sampling theory as applied to data acquisition systems, and processing of digital signals. Proficient in data analysis, signal processing, and engineering statistics using Excel, MATLAB, or similar. Experience developing creative solutions to difficult problems for which no commercial solution exists. Experience giving presentations to a variety of audiences and authoring technical reports or publications. Capable of working in office, indoor and outdoor laboratories, and outdoor field-testing environments. Able to climb stairs and stand for extended periods. Able to lift up to 50 pounds. Preferred:
Successful applicants will have experience in one or more of the following areas:
Experience conducting experiments in test tanks, lakes, or ocean facilities. Experience developing acoustic sensors (in air and underwater) or related signal processing and analysis. Experience specifying, operating, and calibrating various sensors, to include ultrasonic transducers, pressure transducers, hydrophones, RF sensors, thermocouples, flow meters, laser vibrometers. Experience with a wide range of test equipment, including data recorders, computers, PC-based software analyzer programs, oscilloscopes, data analyzers, analog and digital multi-meters, and other test equipment. Ability to work with industrial data acquisition systems such as supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems and Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs). Experience reading, documenting, and updating electrical, microelectronic, and mechanical schematics. Working knowledge of Solidworks including experience with mechanical design. PhD in engineering, chemistry, or physics preferred. Minimum Education and
